In 1926 the Ducati family and other Bolognese investors founded the Società Radio Brevetti Ducati in Bologna.

The Second World War was extremely hard on Ducati: the Borgo Panigale factories were razed to the ground in 1944. Fortunately, the Ducati brothers spent the duration of the war studying and planning new products to be introduced to world markets at the end of the conflict.

50s The arrival of Fabio Taglioni

1952 saw the birth of the futuristic Cruiser 175 cc, with an electric starter and automatic transmission.

In 1953, Ducati unveiled an economic and spartan 98 cc, which was soon increased to 125 cc.

In 1954, a person arrived destined to become a myth in the motorcycle world: engineer Fabio Taglioni. Teacher at the "Tecniche" of Imola, Taglioni had already constructed motorcycles of original technical character and astonishing performance. The Taglioni design, avant-garde and non-conformist, was baptized at the races. From his debut at Ducati, the engineer tried to demonstrate the quality of his solutions, participating in long-distance races such as the Milano-Taranto and Giro d'Italia.

By the end of 1956, Ducati production included a four stroke Tourist 174 and Special and Sport models, capable of considerable performances (110-120-135 km/h). At the 1957 Milan Salon, the above-mentioned models appeared together with an "America" model.

This project resulted in the famous twin-cylinder 250 cc of 1960, ordered from Ducati by the world famous English racer Mike HailwoodTM, who specifically requested a machine of "superior" performance.

60s The start of the Desmo age

The crisis of the Italian motorcycle market continued throughout the ‘60s with significant declines in sales, which also affected Ducati. The introduction of utility cars, the first being the Fiat 500, was the main cause of this collapse, along with the withdrawal of some of the historic Italian motorcycle brands from the racing scene in 1957, including Gilera, Moto Guzzi and Mondial.

The state administration hence decided to make drastic spending cuts in the management of the Borgo Panigale company, in both racing and road model manufacturing. Ducati went into a sort of "hibernation", from which it would only start to awaken from the mid ‘60s onwards.

During this period, projects focused on foreign markets, which were only converted for the Italian and world market in the years to come. 1962 saw the launch of the Scrambler 250 on the US market, which was to become a generation icon, especially on the Italian market. Moreover, in the early ‘60s , one of the most ambitious and unfortunate projects was developed, the Apollo, which saw the creation of the very first 90 degrees L-twin engine.

In 1964, the 250 cc model was added to the prestigious roster of commercial single cylinders, in the Diana, Monza, Aurea, and, later, GP types, capable of approximately 150 km/h - really exceptional performance for the time. This model directly influenced all subsequent single cylinders until the famous 250, 350 and 450 cc "Scrambler".

In 1967 Ducati decided to revolutionise its engines, introducing the Desmodromic system which, until then, had only been used on racing bikes. Two new engine displacements sizes, 350 and 450cc, were thus introduced and went on to be widely used also during the first half of the '70s. Despite not being able to officially compete in racing competitions, Ducati developed the Mach 250, capable of exceeding the 150km/h threshold, which gained it a special place in the heart of all sporting enthusiasts.

In 1968, Ducati bewitched bike aficionados with the fabulous performance of the 450 Mark 3D (more than 170 km/h), the first production Ducati with desmodromic distribution.

Finally, in 1969, also due to the appearance of the first Japanese maxi-bikes on the Italian and European markets, the Italian manufacturers started to update their models and reorganise their factories. It was in this year that Ducati expanded its factory plant in Borgo Panigale, creating new production areas and a new experience area where the first twin-cylinder racing and road bikes were produced, the 500 GP and the 750 GT.

70s Triumphs on the tracks

In 1972, after the success attained in America in the beginning of the sixties with the Scramblers, Ducati proposed utilizing the same formula on the Italian market, with which it had incredible success, especially with the desmodromic 450.

The end of the 1960s coincided with the boom of the maxibikes. Once again, engineer Taglioni provided Ducati with the winning weapon. On April 23, 1972, Ducati returned to racing, participating in the Imola 200 Miles, with a new twin cylinder desmodromic 750, entrusted to Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari who finished first and second. The exceptional 750 Supersport was created in response to the spectacular race.

The bike was a Supersport elevated to 900 cc. In recognition of his exceptional effort, Ducati created the splendid limited edition 900 SS Mike Hailwood™ Replica.

80s Changes and development

In 1983, Ducati was purchased by Claudio and Gianfranco Castiglioni and became part of the Cagiva Group. With this change of management the group was in the hands of two great bike and racing fans, who together brought Ducati to the triumphs of the Superbike era.

90s The new Ducati era

Ducati's commitment to the SBK Championship from 1990 allowed it to achieve its dream of winning its first title with the Ducati 851 just two years later, the first twin-cylinder fitted with a 4-valve Desmoquattro engine. The French rider, Raymond Roche, won the first riders' title for the Bologna-based team in 1990. This was just the start of an incredible run up the championship ladder for Ducati, with bikes based on the standard production models. During these years, in fact, Ducati raced with its 851, 888, 916 and 996 bikes, totting up an amazing number of titles with riders who became legends in the history of the SBK, first and foremost Carl Fogarty, but also Doug Polen, Troy Corser and Giancarlo Falappa.

As regards the production of road motorcycles, Ducati wrote one of the most amazing and intense pages of its history. Based on the experience gained on the racing track, the 851 and 888 became the first road Superbikes available to the general public and enthusiasts. 1993 saw the launch of the Monster, a bike that is still Ducati's biggest commercial success, followed in 1994 by the 916, the bike that rewrote the history of road motorcycles in the ‘90s and is still considered to be one of the most beautiful motorcycles ever built. Finally, Claudio Domenicali - a key figure in the new generation of Ducati engineers - designed his Supermono bike, an exotic and very successful project.

However, despite its success in SBK and significant acclaims in the road bike sector, Ducati was unable to avoid yet another crisis, brought about by the occasionally
unwise management policies of the Cagiva Group, which was forced to sell Ducati to the American investment fund Texas Pacific Group in September 1996. The new management team made some extensive changes in its administration, commercial and marketing policies that strengthened Ducati to the point where it became one of the strongest motorcycle brands on the market.

Simultaneously, the launch of the ST family allowed Ducati to enter the Sport Touring segment of the market.

2000 was the year that the MH900e became the first motorcycle to be sold exclusively on the Internet; its success led Ducati to establish itself as a major player on the Web by creating the Ducati.com website. The racing season closed with the ninth Superbike Manufacturers' Title, despite the forced retirement of Carl "King" Fogarty after a bad fall at the end of March.

In 2001 the Italian factory celebrated the production of 100,000 Monsters since 1993 and presents the Multistrada. On the racing front Troy Bayliss won the World Superbike Championship on the 75th anniversary of the company's founding and Ducati Corse announced its intention to take part in the GP World Championships from 2003 onwards with their new Desmosedici engine. This was also the year that Ducati organised the first rider's school for women and brought the Motogiro d'Italia back after many years. 2001 will also be remembered for the deaths of Bruno Cavalieri Ducati, the last of the three brothers who founded the company, and of Fabio "Dr. T" Taglioni, father of the 90° twin-cylinder engine, still the hallmark engine of Ducati motorcycles.

2002 will go down in history for the launch of the 999, "Bike of the Year" according to the British MotorCycle News magazine, whereas, in the World Superbike Championship, Ducati won its eleventh Manufacturers' Title.

Finally, after three years of intense development efforts, in 2003 the Multistrada was on the road. The results in this debut year exceeded all expectations with a second place overall in the Manufacturers' classification. In the World SBK Championship, Ducati won the Riders' Title again with Neil Hodgson, along with the Manufacturers' Title.

2004 World Ducati Week Edition exceeded the success of the previous years and on the Misano Adriatico stage, Federico Minoli, then president and CEO, announced the company's next dream project: the Desmosedici RR, a limited-edition road replica of the amazing MotoGP motorcycle. November 2005 saw the announcement of the the Hypermotard, set to begin production in 2007. In December, the controlling share holders of Ducati changed from TPG to the Italian company Investindustrial.

In 2006, the Desmosedici RR was launched at the Italian MotoGP in Mugello. The Superbike 1098, the successor of the 999, was also announced and voted "Best Design".

2007 has been an eventful year for Ducati, beginning with Gabriele Del Torchio becoming the new CEO in May, taking over Federico Minoli's former position. In June, the WDW2007 took over the Misano Adriatico circuit once again for four days and set records of every type - over 50,000 people and 20,000 bikes. This is also the year that three new bikes were released with amazing success: the 1098, the Hypermotard and the Desmosedici RR. However, 2007 will be forever remembered as the year that Ducati took its first MotoGP World Title - the first in 33 years for an Italian company - won by Casey Stoner and the Desmosedici GP07 on September 23 at the Motegi track in Japan.
